Purpose and Scope

  • This position exists to maintain the quality of the Timken products produced internally and externally, including develop solutions to complex and unique problems and/or major projects concerning bearing metallurgical quality, various purchase components, process quality control, and suppliers’ quality control.
  • This position ensures that the compliance to the corporate requirements and customer specifications at the Timken aerospace plants and at suppliers by auditing Timken plant, suppliers, communicating and interpreting Timken specifications, applying industry specifications, and helping plants to resolve customer complaints. This position is also responsible to maintain the steel qualifications for aerospace related materials.
  • This position is a major contributor in training new metallurgists/engineers in the company. As part of the Global Metallurgical Quality this position is the main corporate support for global aerospace related materials issues.



  1. Provide solutions to any major customer issues related to materials and metallurgy.
  2. Leads the resolution of internal quality issues concerning heat treat, process control, and materials. Be the main contact for customer service representatives and plant metallurgist globally.
  3. Develop, qualify and audit heat treat, forging and casting suppliers. Maintain and publish supplier corrective actions from audits and provide input for supplier score cards.
  4. Responsible for maintaining flow down of industry standard revisions to the Purchasing organization including trouble shooting shortcomings to new requirements and standard working procedures.
  5. Work with multiple functions across the organization (e.g., Development, Applications Engineering, operations, supply chain to ensure the compliance to the corporate and customer material requirements.
  6. Develop methods to reconcile and resolve differences between customer and supplier specifications.
  7. Act as Subject Matter Expert in the training of new metallurgists and materials engineers with regard to Special Processes.



  • Experience in bearing manufacturing plant and/or other related steel components manufacturer including heat treating operation and evaluation of material properties is essential to success.
  • Detailed knowledge of special metallurgical tools including heat treat and process control, metallography, NADCAP, forging process, and mechanical test equipment as well as ability for statistical analysis is necessary. 
  • Knowledge of steel making process, NDE techniques and auditing skill are required. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, Microsoft Office is also required.  
  • Project management for large multi-discipline projects is necessary.
  • Aerospace experience is a plus.



Minimum – Bachelor’s of Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science with 10+ years of experience.

Preferred – Master’s of Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science with 8+ years of experience.
