Purpose of Position

The objective of this position is to facilitate and execute damage analysis investigations. This position works closely with other engineers and specialists, quality, operations, engineering, and project leaders to ensure that investigations are executed in a timely manner and in alignment with the needs of the Business Units and Technology. This position contributes to laboratory leadership and is expected to maintain a safe/clean laboratory environment while interfacing with team members in order to maintain equipment. 

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Perform damage analysis investigations as requested by customers, internal or external, via sales and service associates, plant personnel, and/or Research & Development associates. Responsibilities include conducting individual damage analysis investigations which involves the collection and identification of all samples and assembling all available information pertaining to the subject damage analysis. Formulate and implement a plan, while anticipating changes and additions in the scope of work and scheduling appropriate tests to accomplish the stated plan in a timely fashion keeping in mind appropriate quality.  All the while corresponding with interested parties and required resources, either in meetings, one-on-one, and/or via telephone or email.
  2. Analyze results obtained from the tests performed.  This requires arranging test data in a logical sequence, while compiling additional information.  Upon inspection of the test data, researched information, independent calculations, and educated assumptions of missing or non-existent information, probable causes are selected.  Confer with other experts and correlation with historical information/data to concur on the best possible root cause of the problem. 
  3. Collaborate with customers and other Timken associates on recommendations for possible corrective actions. Participate in discussions to furnish results/conclusions of investigations, advise of possible solutions and negotiate final solutions and future actions.  Draft, prepare, and revise documentation to disseminate final written reports to the proper distribution of Timken associates.
  4. Assume responsibility for critical lab equipment calibrations and preventative maintenance. Critical equipment includes thermocouples, hardness tester, tensile test auxiliary equipment, microscopes, micrometers, etc. 
  5. Develop ideas for continuous improvement of laboratory productivity, reduction of test cycle-time and set-up time; share best practices with other test groups within the company.
  6. Complete 5S audits (as assigned), maintain a clean and orderly laboratory; ensure proper machine maintenance and operation and safe storage of chemicals and fluids.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills
  • Good knowledge of steel metallurgy, other bearing materials, and associated characterization techniques.
  • Knowledge of relevant industrial standards
  • Experience with production processes
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or related field and,

2-5 years of experience in manufacturing, materials, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Engineering, Business, or related field.
